In October 2014, The Cedar embarked on its first collaborative tour around the state with five Minnesota-based composers and songwriters of a wide range of genres. Merely strangers before the project’s launch, the artists worked together intensively for several days to push their own limitations and blur the boundaries between their work. The ten-day tour included ticketed concerts and impromptu pop-up gigs, reaching audiences in new venues and unexpected places. A short tour documentary filmed and edited by Gordon Byrd is available at

The MN Express EP is a collection of highlights from the tour material, each track featuring one of the five composers. Just like on tour, the artists collaborated and performed on each other’s work. The product is a cohesive, conceptual EP on which each track shines with its own distinct qualities and voice. This EP was created as a special gift to Cedar donors, who each year make it possible for projects like MN Express to connect artists, audiences, and communities through live music.
Artists are all past participants of The Cedar’s 416 Commissions program, an annual Cedar program funded by the Jerome Foundation that commissions emerging artists to compose and perform new music.
This activity was made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and culture heritage fund.
